Computing
Vision Statement
At Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School we have a clear and simple vision: the children should be online-safe, online-inspired and online-confident.
Computing is an integral part of our everyday life and will play an immeasurable part in our children’s futures. At Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Primary school we will provide all of our children with the skills, creativity and enthusiasm to live and thrive in a world increasingly dependent on computing. As computing technology underpins today’s modern lifestyle it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and ability that they need in this subject, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world.
The children have many opportunities to use technology. While all the basics IT skills are covered, eg making a simple Word document or using Paint programs, the children’s experience soon develops and so at Our Lady of Lourdes children are beginning to blog, make web pages, create computer games and animation. As they go through the school they will explore augmented reality and social networking, coding and generate content for younger children as well. We believe it gives them all the experiences they need to prepare them for 21st century lifestyles.
The use of Computing also enhances and extends our children’s learning across the whole curriculum whilst contributing to motivation and the development of social skills.
At Our Lady of Lourdes we aim to utilise the most up to date resources and recognise the need to remain aware of the potential uses of any emerging technologies.
At present, each classroom contains at least two networked PCs and a teacher’s desktop linked to the interactive whiteboard. There are also 40 ipads and 30 chrome books available and each class is assigned a designated slot. Every computer in the school is linked to the school’s filtered broadband connection.
Each child will be able to access the Internet and use the World Wide Web in a safe and respectful way. They will understand the necessary precautions to take, to stay safe and know where to seek help. No child will feel threatened or unsafe whilst online at school or at home. Children will also utilise the Web efficiently to enhance their learning of all subjects. The school will provide a rich bank of curriculum-based resources for children and parents to access at home
A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.
All members of the school community will contribute to the school’s online presence. Our school website and social media pages will continue showcase the excellent work being carried out by our children.
